Continued from previous page: "Larry offers this collection without apology. He has no axe to grind, and, at this point in his long and fruitful musical career, he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. If anyone out there doubts Larry's ability to swing intensely and to thread a rapid-fire, hard-bop line through a complex set of changes at high speed, just pick up any of the many CDs Larry has done in the past, such as Kaleidoscopin', Street of Dreams, or Grand Hotel, or catch Larry live with his regular working quartet. But if you need a respite from the hard-edged, or are tired of the whining soprano insinuations of Kenny G and his two-chord clones, you will find this CD a welcome change of pace. Larry has chosen some great material to interpret. The songs presented here, many of them not heard often enough, are notable not only for the beauty of their meodic line, but for their complex and rich, modern harmonies. Represented here are Antonio Carlos Jobim, Henry Mancini, Quincy Jones, Lennon & McCartney, and Michel Legrand, all preeminent contemporary songwriters who managed to defy convention and win wide popular appeal with good music." "You will find standards such as Tenderly and We'll Be Together Again, faintly remembered movie themes, such as Anywhere The Heart Goes, from The Thornbirds, and Lovers in New York, from Breakfast At Tiffany's, pop classics such as Chances Are and Here, There and Everywhere, the little-known Passarim by Jobim and Nobody Knows by Legrand, the little-played Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most, and Quincy Jones' Quintessential Quintessence. To
maintain the jazz feel of the music, Larry performs with his regular
working quartet of Terry Lower on piano,
Ray Tini on bass, and Jim Ryan on drums. Todd Carlon
replaces Terry on piano on several tracks. Don Carpenter or Peter
Dominguez replace Ray Tini on bass for some cuts, and Bernie Dressel
replaces Jim Ryan on drums for some cuts. Dennis Sheridan ads his
unique touch on percussion on tracks 2, 4, and 11, and Mike Higgins
is added on guitar on tracks 1, 2, and 4. Altogether, this is good
music, masterfully interpreted, and flawlessly performed. This is
one jazz CD you can share with your non-jazz friends, and they will
thank you for it." --
