Four for Three - The Music of Eddie Russ

Eddie Russ 1934 -1996

For me the spirit of Eddie Russ began in the early 1970's when I first heard the inspiring 'feel' of his musical style. Today, this spirit lives on in everything Eddie wrote, and in everyone who gets to play it. And sometimes, this spirit of his lives on in those who simply get what he felt when this delightful man created this delightful music. I hope you will get it, too. This recording is our humble tribute to Eddie Russ and his music.

Eddie had the ability to refine a melody with just the right notes, not too many, not too few. He was a master at knowing what not to play. He could swing with ease, and that captivated me from the start. That was the beginning of a personal and musical friendship that lasted for more than twenty years.

I take great pleasure in presenting this work.
Thank you Eddie, for the music

Soon after we met, the group Mixed Bag formed to perform original music, some of which you will hear on this collection and which was also recorded nearly thirty years ago on an album called Fresh Out. It included Eddie, Danny Spencer, Jerry Glassel, Ron Brooks, David Koether and myself. That group was one of the most exciting and creative I have ever played with. Eddie contributed many of the compositions. His music and graceful style were always well received and appreciated by audiences and musicians. Like all other jazz masters, the groove was always the main focus in his approach and because of this, musicians were always eager to play with him.

For years Eddie and I worked with our own bands, but occasionally found the opportunity to join each other on the stand at local clubs and concerts. Eddie and his music have been highly praised outside of the United States and in his later years he took the opportunity to tour in Europe where his music has been as well received as it is here.
